What to Know About a Person With Rabies

Rabies affects the brain and nerves and becomes life-threatening once symptoms develop. Healthcare and public-health teams coordinate diagnosis, supportive treatment, infection precautions, and assessment of anyone who may have had a meaningful exposure.

Rabies virus is carried in saliva and nervous tissue. Casual proximity, conversation, touching intact skin, and sharing a room are not considered typical exposure routes. Concern arises if saliva contacts broken skin or the eyes, mouth, or nose, or if a bite occurs.

Symptoms can include fever, unusual sensations near an earlier bite, agitation, confusion, swallowing difficulty, fear or distress when trying to drink, excess saliva, weakness, or paralysis. These features have other possible causes, so suspected rabies must be assessed by emergency specialists rather than judged at home.

Do not touch saliva with bare hands. If saliva reaches a wound or broken skin, wash the area thoroughly with soap and running water. Flush the eyes or mouth with plenty of clean water after a splash, then seek urgent medical advice without waiting for symptoms.

Tell the clinician exactly what happened, which body surface was exposed, when it occurred, and whether the source had confirmed or suspected rabies. Rabies post-exposure prophylaxis may include wound care, vaccination, and another protective medicine depending on the exposure and previous vaccination history.

Call emergency services for a person with suspected rabies symptoms, particularly confusion, agitation, seizures, breathing difficulty, swallowing problems, or progressive weakness. Do not restrain or transport an agitated person unless emergency professionals direct you. Any bite or saliva exposure to broken skin or a mucous membrane requires urgent assessment even when the exposed person feels well.

Ask whether the contact meets the definition of an exposure, how to clean any affected area, and whether post-exposure prophylaxis should start. Mention previous rabies vaccination, immune-system conditions, pregnancy, and all medicines so the team can select the appropriate schedule and follow-up.
