What many skin tags on the neck may mean

Skin tags, also called acrochordons, commonly form where skin rubs against skin, collars, jewellery or folds. Having several does not by itself make them dangerous. Their number may increase gradually, and they can catch, twist, bleed or become sore from friction.

A typical tag is a small, soft, flesh-coloured or slightly darker growth that hangs from a narrow stalk. Neck folds are a frequent site because of repeated rubbing. Skin tags are not contagious and are not caused by poor hygiene.

Other growths can resemble a tag, including moles, warts and some less common skin lesions. A firm growth, an irregularly pigmented spot, a sore that does not heal, or a lesion that looks unlike the others should not be assumed to be a skin tag. A clinician can inspect it closely before removal.

Reduce repeated rubbing where practical by choosing a softer collar or repositioning jewellery. If a tag is accidentally nicked, wash gently, apply steady pressure with clean gauze until bleeding settles, and protect it from further friction.

Do not cut, burn or tie off a suspected tag at home. Neck lesions can bleed, become infected or heal with a scar, and home methods may injure a growth that was misidentified. A trained clinician can confirm the lesion and discuss snip removal, freezing or electrosurgery according to its size, base, location and your skin.

Arrange an examination if a growth enlarges quickly, changes colour or shape, becomes firm, repeatedly bleeds without being caught, develops an open sore, or remains painful. These changes do not establish a diagnosis, but they make visual assessment more important.

Seek timely care if a twisted tag becomes dark and very painful, if bleeding does not settle with continuous pressure, or if increasing redness, warmth, swelling or discharge suggests infection. A sudden crop of many new growths can also be discussed at a routine medical visit alongside any other health changes.

Ask whether every growth has the typical appearance of a skin tag, which removal method suits the neck area, and whether treatment could leave a lighter, darker or raised mark. Mention medicines that affect bleeding, a history of thick scars, skin allergies and any previous reaction to local anaesthetic or adhesive dressings.
