A little bleeding after sex

Light spotting may come from friction, vaginal dryness, inflammation, infection, a cervical surface change, or a polyp. The amount alone cannot reveal the source, and bleeding that stops still deserves an appointment if it recurs.

Dry or delicate vaginal tissue can bleed after contact, especially around menopause, during breastfeeding, or when there was not enough lubrication. Cervical inflammation may occur with infections such as chlamydia. Cervical dysplasia, cervical cancer, and vaginal cancer can also present with bleeding after sex, so persistent bleeding needs examination rather than self-diagnosis.

Blood may occasionally be menstrual blood noticed during sex. Note whether it came from the vagina, whether there was pain or discharge, and where you were in your cycle.

If the bleeding was only a smear and has stopped, avoid further penetration until soreness settles and arrange a non-urgent appointment if the cause is unclear. Record the colour and amount, pain, discharge, contraception, last menstrual period, pregnancy possibility, and whether this has happened before.

A clinician may examine the vagina and cervix, offer a pregnancy or infection test, and check whether cervical screening is due. Screening does not replace assessment of a current symptom. Treatment depends on the cause, so avoid using leftover antibiotics or internal remedies.

Seek urgent care if bleeding becomes heavy, continues, or comes with severe pelvic or abdominal pain, fainting, dizziness, marked weakness, fever, or feeling acutely unwell. If pregnancy is possible or confirmed, contact a maternity or urgent care service promptly about bleeding, particularly with one-sided pain or shoulder-tip pain.

Ask whether an examination, infection testing, pregnancy test, or cervical screening review is appropriate. Mention vaginal dryness, pain during sex, unusual discharge, bleeding between periods, medication changes, and any bleeding after menopause because each detail changes the assessment.
