A barking cough that sounds like a seal

Croup commonly presents with a barking cough, hoarse voice, and a high-pitched noise while breathing in called stridor. Symptoms may become more noticeable at night or when a child cries because a narrowed upper airway makes airflow noisier. A cold-like illness can precede the cough.

Other cough patterns can overlap. Wheeze usually sounds musical during breathing out and can occur with Asthma, while nasal drainage from Allergic Rhinitis may cause throat clearing. A clinician can distinguish these sounds and check whether breathing effort is increased.

Keep the child upright and as calm as possible, since distress can make noisy breathing worse. Offer frequent drinks if swallowing is comfortable, keep smoke and strong fragrances away, and check breathing regularly. Do not place the child near steam or boiling water because burns can occur.

Avoid over-the-counter cough and cold products unless a clinician or pharmacist confirms that the specific product is suitable for the child. If medical treatment is prescribed, use it exactly as directed and watch for renewed breathing noise after initial improvement.

Call emergency services if the child is struggling for breath, has blue or grey lips, becomes unusually sleepy or difficult to wake, drools because swallowing is hard, or has pauses in breathing. Stridor while resting, marked pulling-in between the ribs or at the neck, and rapidly worsening symptoms also need urgent assessment.

Seek same-day advice for a barking cough in a very young infant, poor drinking, reduced urine, persistent fever, or symptoms that repeatedly disturb sleep. A cough that continues beyond the expected illness or keeps returning deserves a clinical review.

Describe whether noisy breathing occurs only with crying or also at rest, and mention fever, drooling, wheeze, feeding, urine output, and recent choking. Ask how to monitor breathing overnight and what change should prompt immediate reassessment.
