Managing acid reflux at 8 months pregnant

Short answer
Acid reflux is common late in pregnancy, but severe chest or abdominal symptoms should be assessed rather than automatically treated as heartburn.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical pattern
- Burning or sour taste after food or when lying down
- First steps
- Smaller meals and staying upright after eating
- Medicine check
- Confirm pregnancy suitability and spacing from other tablets
The short answer
Smaller meals, remaining upright after eating and avoiding personal food triggers may help. Check any antacid or acid-reducing medicine with a maternity clinician or pharmacist because not every product is suitable during pregnancy.
Why reflux can increase late in pregnancy
Pregnancy hormones can relax the muscular valve between the stomach and oesophagus. As the uterus enlarges, pressure on the stomach can make acidic contents travel upward. This may cause burning behind the breastbone, a sour taste, burping or discomfort after meals and when lying down.
Reflux can also aggravate a cough or disturb sleep. Those symptoms have other possible causes, so mention persistent breathing or sleep problems during antenatal care rather than assuming reflux explains everything.
Changes that may reduce symptoms
Try smaller, more frequent meals and eat slowly. Leave time between the evening meal and lying down, sit upright after food, and note whether spicy, fatty or acidic foods, chocolate or caffeinated drinks trigger symptoms for you. Raising the head and upper chest during sleep can reduce backflow; avoid simply bending at the waist.
Do not start sodium bicarbonate remedies, herbal products or someone else's prescription. A maternity clinician or pharmacist can recommend a pregnancy-compatible option and check how it should be spaced from iron, thyroid medicine or other tablets.
Symptoms that need medical attention
Seek emergency help for crushing or severe chest pain, chest tightness with breathlessness, fainting, sweating or pain spreading to the arm, back or jaw. Urgent maternity assessment is also appropriate for severe or persistent upper abdominal pain, a severe headache, visual changes, sudden swelling, vaginal bleeding, regular painful tightenings, leaking fluid or reduced fetal movement.
Arrange a routine review if swallowing is difficult, food sticks, vomiting persists, vomit contains blood, stools look black, weight is falling or reflux regularly interrupts eating and sleep.
Questions for your maternity team
Ask which medicine and dose are suitable with your other treatments, how to separate it from supplements, and what symptoms should trigger maternity triage. Explain when the burning occurs, what you have tried, whether swallowing is affected and whether the baby is moving in the usual pattern.

Questions people ask
Can reflux harm the baby?
Reflux symptoms usually arise in the mother's digestive tract. The main concerns are keeping the mother comfortable, eating and hydrated, while recognising symptoms that need maternity assessment.
Can I take an antacid while pregnant?
Some products may be used during pregnancy, but the ingredients and your other medicines matter. Ask a maternity clinician or pharmacist to select an appropriate product.
Is chest pain always reflux in late pregnancy?
No. Chest pain has several possible causes. Severe pain or pain with breathlessness, faintness, sweating or radiation needs emergency assessment.
