Heart palpitations four months after giving birth

Short answer
Heart palpitations four months after birth should be assessed if they are new, recurrent or prolonged, and urgently if accompanied by chest pain, fainting or breathlessness.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

The short answer
A racing, pounding, fluttering or skipped-beat sensation can have several explanations. Sleep disruption, dehydration and caffeine may contribute, while anaemia, thyroid changes and heart rhythm problems can also present with palpitations.
Possible reasons after pregnancy
Recovery after birth can include interrupted sleep, irregular meals, stress and shifts in activity. Dehydration can present with thirst, darker urine, dizziness and a faster heartbeat. Iron deficiency anaemia can present with palpitations together with tiredness, breathlessness, weakness or pallor, particularly after substantial blood loss.
Hyperthyroidism can present with a racing heart, heat intolerance, tremor, sweating or weight change. Atrial fibrillation can present with a fast or irregular pulse, weakness, dizziness or breathlessness. Heart failure can present with breathlessness, difficulty lying flat, swelling or rapid worsening of exercise tolerance. Symptoms alone cannot separate these causes.
What to do between episodes
During an episode, stop strenuous activity, sit somewhere safe and note whether the pulse feels regular or irregular. Record when it began, how long it lasted, what you were doing and any chest discomfort, dizziness or breathing change. If available, save a wearable-device tracing, but do not let a normal reading delay care for concerning symptoms.
Drink regularly, eat consistent meals and consider reducing caffeine or nicotine if either seems to trigger episodes. Do not take someone else's heart or thyroid medicine. Arrange a clinical review for repeated palpitations; assessment may include a pulse and blood pressure check, heart tracing and blood tests guided by your history.
When palpitations are urgent
Call emergency services for palpitations with chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, blue or grey lips, confusion, coughing blood, or a sudden collapse. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or severely unwell.
Seek same-day medical advice for a sustained rapid or irregular heartbeat, new shortness of breath, dizziness, worsening weakness, breathlessness when lying flat, or new leg swelling, especially if one leg is painful or more swollen than the other. Prompt assessment is also appropriate when episodes are becoming more frequent.
Details to bring to your clinician
Share the timing and duration of each episode, whether the pulse felt steady, any smartwatch tracing, birth-related blood loss, current bleeding, breastfeeding, recent illness and all medicines or supplements. Ask whether a heart tracing, blood count, iron assessment, thyroid testing or longer rhythm monitoring fits your pattern.

Questions people ask
Can lack of sleep cause palpitations after birth?
Sleep disruption and stress may make palpitations more noticeable or contribute to episodes, but they should not be assumed to be the cause when symptoms recur or come with warning signs.
Can breastfeeding cause heart palpitations?
Breastfeeding itself does not identify the cause. Increased fluid needs, missed meals and sleep disruption may contribute, so mention feeding, hydration and meal patterns during assessment.
What tests might be considered?
A clinician may check your pulse and blood pressure, record the heart rhythm and order blood tests based on symptoms. Intermittent episodes may require longer rhythm monitoring.
