Extreme fatigue at 37 weeks pregnant

Short answer
Marked tiredness can occur at 37 weeks pregnant, but extreme, sudden or worsening fatigue should be discussed with your maternity team.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Extreme fatigue at 37 weeks
Late pregnancy places greater physical demands on the body, and sleep is often disrupted by discomfort, fetal movement and frequent urination. Fatigue that prevents basic activities or feels distinctly different from your usual pregnancy tiredness deserves assessment.
What may be contributing
Poor sleep, reduced food or fluid intake, emotional strain and the effort of carrying the pregnancy can all lower energy. Anaemia can present with fatigue, breathlessness, palpitations, headaches or pallor, while infection may bring fever, aches, cough, urinary symptoms or a general feeling of illness.
Fatigue is a symptom rather than a diagnosis. A clinician can review its onset, check blood pressure and other observations, assess hydration, and decide whether blood or urine tests are appropriate.
Practical steps for today
Pause non-essential tasks, accept help and alternate activity with seated or side-lying rest. Eat regular meals or snacks containing protein and iron-rich foods, and drink regularly unless you have been given a fluid restriction.
Gentle movement may ease stiffness and support sleep if it feels comfortable, but stop if you become dizzy, breathless or unwell. Continue prescribed supplements as directed. Avoid starting high-dose supplements or stimulants to push through exhaustion without clinical advice.
When to contact maternity care
Contact your maternity unit promptly if fetal movement is reduced or changed, or if fatigue occurs with severe headache, vision changes, pain below the ribs, sudden swelling, vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid or regular painful contractions.
Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, fainting, confusion, blue or grey lips, or weakness affecting one side of the body. Fever, persistent vomiting, inability to drink, painful urination or rapidly worsening exhaustion also warrants timely medical advice.
What to discuss with your clinician
Describe when the fatigue began, whether rest restores your energy, and any breathlessness, palpitations, dizziness, pain, mood changes or infection symptoms. Ask whether your blood count, blood pressure, urine or current medicines need review and which changes should trigger another call.

Questions people ask
Is extreme fatigue a sign of labour?
Fatigue alone does not confirm labour. Regular painful contractions, vaginal fluid loss or bleeding are more relevant changes to report to maternity care.
Could anaemia cause severe tiredness in late pregnancy?
Anaemia can present with fatigue and may also cause breathlessness, palpitations, headaches or pallor. A blood test is used to assess it.
Should I exercise when I feel exhausted?
Choose rest when you feel unwell or depleted. Gentle movement can be reasonable if comfortable, but stop and seek advice for dizziness, unusual breathlessness, pain or other warning signs.
