Short answer

Tiredness at 36 weeks can follow disrupted sleep and greater physical effort, although a marked change should be discussed clinically.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

A clear overview

Frequent waking, discomfort, needing to urinate, and the energy demands of late pregnancy can all reduce stamina. Pay attention to whether rest helps and whether tiredness arrives with breathlessness, dizziness, fever, pain, low mood, reduced fetal movement, or other new symptoms.

Putting tiredness in context

Ordinary tiredness may build through the day yet still allow basic self-care. A new inability to stay awake, walk across a room comfortably, prepare food, or recover after rest is a more significant functional change and deserves earlier contact with your maternity team.

Anaemia may present with tiredness plus pallor, headache, breathlessness, or a racing heartbeat. Dehydration can present with low energy, thirst, dizziness, dry mouth, or less urine. Infection, medication effects, sleep problems, and emotional distress are other possibilities a clinician can consider.

Conserving energy safely

Plan demanding tasks for the part of the day when your energy is higher, alternate activity with breaks, and ask others to handle lifting or prolonged chores. Keep water accessible unless your clinician has limited fluids, and eat regular balanced meals rather than relying on caffeine for alertness.

Make sleep more comfortable with supportive pillows and a calm wind-down routine. If worry, persistent sadness, snoring with gasping, restless legs, pain, or reflux repeatedly interrupts sleep, mention the specific problem at your antenatal visit because the response depends on the cause.

Take prenatal medicines as directed, but do not increase iron or add energising supplements without professional advice. Your clinician can decide whether symptoms call for examination, blood pressure measurement, or laboratory checks.

When tiredness becomes urgent

Call emergency services if tiredness occurs with chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, fainting, confusion, a seizure, or sudden one-sided weakness. A painful swollen leg together with breathlessness or chest pain also requires emergency care.

Contact your maternity unit promptly about reduced fetal movement, bleeding, fluid leaking from the vagina, painful regular contractions, fever, repeated vomiting, a severe headache, vision changes, sudden swelling, or persistent pain under the ribs. Seek timely advice for steadily worsening tiredness, dizziness on standing, palpitations, or reduced ability to eat, drink, and manage daily needs.

Points for your next appointment

Ask whether your pattern warrants checks for anaemia, dehydration, infection, thyroid problems, or a sleep or mood issue. Share when the tiredness started, how it changes through the day, how well you sleep, what you eat and drink, and whether fetal movement remains normal for your baby.

Questions people ask

How can I tell tiredness from extreme fatigue?

The words overlap, so function matters more than the label. Difficulty staying awake, completing basic care, walking comfortably, or recovering with rest is a reason to seek clinical advice.

Can poor sleep explain daytime tiredness?

Fragmented sleep can reduce daytime energy. Even so, new breathlessness, faintness, fever, palpitations, severe pain, or pregnancy warning signs should not be attributed to poor sleep alone.

Will more iron improve my energy?

Iron helps when iron deficiency is present, but tiredness has several possible causes and unnecessary iron may cause side effects. Use the dose recommended after clinical assessment.
