Preeclampsia at 36 weeks: care and warning signs

How the structures involved in Pre-eclampsia differ from normal

Short answer

At 36 weeks, preeclampsia requires maternity-led monitoring and an individual plan for the safest timing and method of birth.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Blood pressure and symptoms still require follow-up

The key point

Decisions depend on blood pressure control, symptoms, urine and blood results, and how the baby is doing. Worsening findings can make earlier birth safer than continuing the pregnancy.

Why monitoring is close

Preeclampsia can affect blood vessels and organs, including the kidneys, liver, brain, and clotting system, as well as placental function. It can change over a short period, and a person may have significant blood-pressure or test abnormalities without feeling very ill.

The team may repeat blood-pressure readings, test urine and blood, assess symptoms, record the baby's heart rate, and use ultrasound to review growth, fluid, or blood flow. Results are interpreted together rather than relying on any isolated reading.

Following your care plan

Attend each requested review even if you feel normal, and take blood-pressure medicine as prescribed. Know which maternity number to call at any hour, arrange practical support in case admission is advised, and keep track of your baby's usual movements.

Your obstetric team may discuss induction of labour or caesarean birth. Neither route is automatic: urgency, your clinical stability, fetal wellbeing and position, the cervix, and previous births all help shape the recommendation.

Warning signs needing immediate help

Seek immediate maternity assessment for a headache that is severe or does not settle, changes in vision, intense upper abdominal or rib pain, new vomiting, rapidly increasing swelling of the face or hands, difficulty breathing, bleeding, or reduced fetal movement. Call emergency services if you have a seizure, collapse, lose consciousness, or cannot breathe properly.

Plan the next decisions

Ask which finding is driving the current plan, where monitoring will occur, how soon tests will be repeated, and what threshold would prompt admission or birth. Discuss how labour would be started if induction is chosen, when caesarean delivery might be advised, and what monitoring continues after delivery.

Questions people ask

Can preeclampsia get worse even when I feel well?

Yes. Changes may first appear in blood pressure, urine, blood tests, or fetal checks, so feeling well does not replace planned monitoring.

Does delivering the baby end all monitoring immediately?

No. Blood pressure and complications can persist or first become apparent after birth, so follow-up and prescribed medication remain important.

Is induction always the chosen plan?

No. Induction may be suitable for some people, while a caesarean may be advised when maternal or fetal findings, position, or urgency make it the safer route.
