Short answer

Feeling tired at 31 weeks can reflect disrupted sleep and the increasing physical workload of later pregnancy.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Useful distinction
Gradual fatigue that eases with rest versus sudden or disabling exhaustion
Safety
Do not drive or use machinery when sleepiness reduces alertness
Baby movements
A change from your baby's normal pattern needs an immediate call

The short answer

It may be expected when it develops gradually and improves somewhat with rest, but intense, abrupt or function-limiting fatigue deserves attention. Your clinician can consider sleep problems, anaemia, dehydration, infection, mood symptoms, medication effects and other medical causes.

Look at the whole pattern

A growing abdomen may make movement more demanding and comfortable sleep harder to achieve. Reflux, needing to pass urine, vivid dreams and leg discomfort can fragment the night. Anaemia can present with tiredness alongside pallor, dizziness, breathlessness or a noticeable heartbeat, while infection may add fever or feeling acutely unwell.

Consider how fatigue differs from your earlier pregnancy baseline. Note whether it improves after rest, when it is strongest, how much you are sleeping, and whether eating, drinking, mood or concentration has changed. This pattern is more useful than the word tired alone.

Pace activity and support recovery

Divide chores into manageable parts, alternate effort with planned pauses and ask others to take on heavier jobs. A consistent wind-down routine, supportive pillows and fewer screen-based distractions before bed may improve rest. If you have no activity restriction, comfortable walking or other gentle movement can prevent long sedentary stretches and support sleep.

Have regular meals containing varied sources of protein and iron, and drink throughout the day. Take only the supplements recommended for you; extra iron can cause side effects and should match an identified need. If exhaustion affects alertness, arrange another driver and postpone tasks involving heights, machinery or other hazards.

Warning signs at 31 weeks

Request prompt maternity advice for a sudden energy collapse, repeated faintness, persistent dizziness, fever, breathlessness beyond what is normal for you, palpitations, bleeding, ongoing vomiting, or fatigue so pronounced that basic activities become difficult. Severe headache, visual changes, sudden swelling of the face or hands, or persistent pain beneath the ribs also need urgent maternity assessment.

Chest pain, severe breathing difficulty, collapse or confusion requires emergency care. Any decrease, stop or clear alteration in your baby's normal movement pattern requires an immediate call to the maternity unit, including overnight; do not wait for a routine appointment.

Details to share with your clinician

Explain the onset and daily impact of the tiredness, sleep interruptions, diet, fluid intake and associated symptoms. Useful questions include whether your existing blood results need review, whether a medicine could be contributing, and which sleep or activity adjustments are suitable given your pregnancy history.

Questions people ask

Will extra iron fix tiredness at 31 weeks?

Iron helps when iron deficiency is the cause, but tiredness has many possible contributors. Your maternity clinician can use your symptoms and blood results to decide whether iron is appropriate.

Can poor sleep account for daytime exhaustion?

Repeated waking from discomfort, reflux or urination can leave sleep unrefreshing. Mention ongoing insomnia, low mood, anxiety, loud snoring or waking short of breath because these details may change the advice.

When should fatigue be discussed before my next visit?

Seek earlier advice if it starts suddenly, worsens quickly, limits essential activities, or accompanies dizziness, fever, breathlessness, palpitations, bleeding, severe headache, visual symptoms or swelling.
