The etonogestrel implant rod releases a progestogen that mainly prevents ovulation and thickens cervical mucus. It does not contain oestrogen and does not protect against sexually transmitted infections. Condoms add infection protection and may be advised for a short interval after insertion, depending on cycle timing.

Bleeding often changes in an unpredictable way: periods may become lighter, less frequent, prolonged, irregular, or absent. Other possible effects include headache, acne, breast tenderness, mood changes, or soreness and bruising at the insertion site. A changed bleeding pattern does not show whether contraception is working.

Before insertion, discuss pregnancy possibility, menstrual timing, medicines, supplements, liver or breast conditions, unexplained vaginal bleeding, and your contraception priorities. Some medicines can reduce implant effectiveness, so provide a complete current list and check before starting anything new.

Keep a record of the insertion date, product, arm, and planned replacement date. Follow wound-care instructions and confirm that you can gently feel the rod once swelling settles. Do not try to reposition or remove it yourself. Arrange replacement or a switch before the approved duration ends.

Seek prompt advice if you cannot feel the implant, it seems bent or has moved, the skin opens, or the site becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen, painful, or drains pus. Use the backup contraception recommended by a clinician until the implant's position and protection are confirmed.

Urgent assessment is needed for a positive pregnancy test or pregnancy symptoms with one-sided pelvic pain, shoulder-tip pain, faintness, or bleeding. Also obtain urgent care for chest pain, breathing difficulty, sudden weakness, a severe unusual headache, or signs of a serious allergic reaction.

Ask when contraceptive protection begins, what backup is required, how bleeding changes can be managed, and which medicines interact. Discuss how removal is arranged and compare the implant with a hormonal coil if you want another long-acting reversible option.
