A three-day fever followed by a rash

The timing alone cannot name the illness. Age, vaccination history, exposure to illness, medicines, the rash's appearance, and whether the fever has settled all help a clinician narrow the possibilities. A person who seems very unwell needs urgent assessment regardless of the rash pattern.

Some viral illnesses produce a rash as the temperature improves, while others cause fever and rash together. Chickenpox commonly presents with itchy spots that become fluid-filled blisters in successive crops. Other infections may produce flat or raised patches, respiratory symptoms, sore throat, swollen glands, or mouth changes.

A new medicine can also cause a widespread rash, sometimes with fever. Tender, hot, expanding redness is more consistent with inflammation in the skin and requires assessment. These patterns overlap, so photographs and a clear timeline are useful but do not replace an examination.

Check the person's temperature and alertness, encourage fluids, and keep clothing light and comfortable. Note when each symptom started, where the rash began, whether it blanches when pressed, and any cough, breathing problem, pain, itching, vomiting, diarrhoea, or recent medicine.

Limit close contact with other people until you have clinical advice because some causes spread easily. Call ahead before visiting a clinic so staff can reduce exposure to pregnant people, babies, and anyone with a weakened immune system. Use fever medicine only as directed for the person's age and health.

Seek emergency care for a rash that does not fade under a clear glass, difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, severe drowsiness, confusion, a seizure, a stiff neck, intense headache, or rapidly worsening illness. Do not delay because the fever has fallen.

Prompt assessment is also needed for dehydration, repeated vomiting, severe pain, blistering or peeling skin, sores affecting the eyes or mouth, facial swelling, or a rash beginning soon after a medicine. Babies, pregnant people, and those with reduced immunity should receive early clinical guidance when fever and rash occur.

Report the highest measured temperature, the sequence of symptoms, exposures, travel, vaccination history, and every recently used medicine. Ask whether testing or isolation is needed, how to relieve itching or fever safely, what fluid intake to aim for, and which changes should trigger reassessment.
