The glucose test around 28 weeks of pregnancy

The exact test and preparation vary between maternity services. You may be asked to avoid food beforehand, have a blood sample, drink a measured glucose solution, wait at the clinic and provide another sample. Follow the instructions from your own service.

Pregnancy hormones can make insulin less effective. If the body cannot produce enough insulin to compensate, blood glucose rises. This can happen without obvious symptoms, which is why testing may be offered according to local maternity practice and personal risk factors.

An abnormal result is not a judgement about what you ate and cannot be interpreted from one home reading. Your maternity team will explain whether the result confirms gestational diabetes, needs another check or falls within the expected range for the test used.

Read the clinic instructions in advance because eating, drinking, usual medicines and arrival time may be handled differently depending on the test. Bring something quiet to do during the waiting period and plan transport if fasting or blood sampling tends to make you light-headed.

Tell the clinic beforehand if you are vomiting, acutely unwell, unable to fast, taking medicine that affects glucose, or have had bariatric surgery. Do not change prescribed medicine without advice. During the test, report nausea, dizziness or feeling faint to staff rather than leaving without speaking to them.

Ask when and how results will reach you, and contact the maternity service if that expected time passes. If gestational diabetes is identified, follow-up may include food guidance, glucose monitoring, medicine when needed and additional pregnancy review; the plan is individual.

Seek urgent medical advice if you are pregnant and develop severe vomiting with inability to keep fluids down, confusion, fainting, deep or difficult breathing, or marked drowsiness. These symptoms warrant assessment regardless of whether a glucose test is pending.

Confirm whether fasting is required, which medicines to take that morning, how long to allow for the visit and what happens if you vomit the drink. Afterward, ask what your result means, whether further testing is needed and who will help with monitoring or nutrition if glucose is raised.
