What to know about a 24-hour urine test

It can give a broader picture than a single urine sample because the amount of some substances changes during the day. The laboratory only analyses what is in the container, so a missed sample, a spill, or collection beyond the instructed period may make the result less reliable.

The requested measurements depend on the clinical question. A clinician may use the collection to assess kidney handling of protein, minerals, salts, hormones, or waste products. A result outside the laboratory range does not diagnose a condition by itself; collection quality, medicines, food, fluid intake, kidney function, and other tests all affect interpretation.

Your report may list the total urine volume as well as the amount or concentration of particular substances. The clinician interprets these together with your symptoms, medical history, blood tests, and the reason the test was ordered.

Follow the laboratory's start and finish instructions exactly. Usually, you empty your bladder at the chosen start time without adding that urine to the container, record the time, then collect every subsequent urination. At the same time on the following day, collect the final sample. Use only the supplied container and keep it stored as instructed.

Do not stop prescribed medicine or deliberately change your diet or fluid intake unless the ordering clinician tells you to. Tell the laboratory if you miss a sample, spill urine, collect stool or toilet paper in the container, or cannot keep it at the required temperature. They may advise restarting with a new container.

The collection itself should not cause illness. Seek prompt medical advice for fever with pain in the back or side, vomiting that prevents fluids staying down, visible blood in urine, painful urination with worsening symptoms, or a marked reduction in urine. Get urgent help if you cannot pass urine, feel confused or faint, or develop severe pain.

Do not wait for the collection to finish if concerning symptoms appear. Contact the clinic that ordered the test to learn whether to keep the container and whether the test needs to be repeated after treatment.

Ask which substances are being measured, whether any food or medicine needs special handling, how the container should be stored, and what to do if a sample is missed. You can also ask when results are expected and whether an unusual result will need a repeat collection, blood test, or other assessment.
