Two weeks after a hysterectomy: recovery and warning signs

Short answer
Two weeks after a hysterectomy, tiredness, abdominal soreness and light vaginal discharge can occur, but recovery varies with the surgical approach.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Recovery focus
- Gentle movement, rest and protection of internal healing
- Call promptly for
- Worsening pain, fever, heavy bleeding or wound changes
- Restrictions
- Follow the limits given for your exact surgical approach
The short answer
You are still healing internally even if the skin wounds look settled. Follow the discharge instructions from your surgical team because limits can differ after abdominal, vaginal, laparoscopic or robot-assisted surgery.
What recovery may look like
Energy often returns unevenly: a manageable morning may be followed by marked fatigue later. Mild pulling around incisions, bloating, constipation and light pink or brown discharge may accompany tissue healing. Pain should generally be controllable with the plan you were given rather than becoming progressively stronger.
The reason for surgery also shapes follow-up. Hysterectomy may be used in care for uterine fibroids, adenomyosis, endometriosis, endometrial hyperplasia or some gynaecological cancers, and results from tissue testing may affect the next appointment.
How to support healing now
Take short, gentle walks and increase activity gradually without straining. Use prescribed medicines as directed, drink enough fluid and choose fibre-containing foods to reduce constipation. Keep wounds clean according to your instructions and notice any change in redness, swelling or drainage.
Avoid lifting, vigorous exercise, penetrative sex, tampons and putting anything into the vagina until your clinician clears them. Do not drive while taking sedating pain medicine or until you can comfortably make an emergency stop and your team says driving is suitable.
When to seek medical care
Contact your surgical team promptly for fever, worsening abdominal or pelvic pain, foul-smelling discharge, increasing wound redness, pus, persistent vomiting, difficulty passing urine, or bleeding that becomes heavy or includes clots.
Seek urgent care for sudden shortness of breath, chest pain, coughing blood, fainting, or a painful swollen calf. These symptoms can signal a blood clot or another serious postoperative problem and should not wait for a routine review.
Questions for your follow-up
Ask when your specific activity restrictions can change, whether your wound and discharge look appropriate, how long to continue each medicine, and when work or driving may resume. Also ask whether the cervix, ovaries or fallopian tubes were removed and whether that changes screening, menopause care or future follow-up.

Questions people ask
Is fatigue expected two weeks after hysterectomy?
Yes, significant tiredness can still occur because surgery and internal healing use substantial energy. Pace activity and contact your clinician if fatigue is worsening or accompanies breathlessness, faintness or heavy bleeding.
Can I exercise two weeks after hysterectomy?
Gentle walking is commonly encouraged, but strenuous exercise and lifting usually remain restricted at this stage. Use the personalised limits in your discharge plan and confirm progression at follow-up.
Is vaginal discharge normal during recovery?
Light pink, brown or watery discharge can occur as tissues heal. Seek advice if it becomes foul-smelling, suddenly heavier, bright red, or contains clots.
