Recovery differs according to whether surgery was abdominal, vaginal, laparoscopic, or robot-assisted and whether the ovaries or other tissues were treated. Your discharge plan takes priority over general timelines.

Energy can fluctuate, and abdominal pulling, pelvic heaviness, mild incision soreness, constipation, or light vaginal discharge may still occur. The internal surgical site continues healing even if the skin incisions look closed.

Pain and mobility should show an overall trend toward improvement. Menstrual periods stop after the uterus is removed. If both ovaries were removed, menopausal symptoms may begin; ask the surgical team how those symptoms will be managed in light of the reason for surgery.

Take short walks and increase distance as comfort allows, balancing movement with rest. Follow the surgeon’s limits on lifting, driving, exercise, work, bathing, and wound care. Driving should wait until you can sit comfortably, react quickly, and are no longer affected by sedating pain medicine.

Do not put anything into the vagina—including tampons—and avoid penetrative sex until the surgeon confirms that internal healing is sufficient. Keep stools soft with fluid, fibre, movement, and any recommended bowel medicine; straining can worsen discomfort.

Contact your surgical team promptly for fever, worsening pain, vomiting, difficulty passing urine, an opening incision, spreading redness, pus, unpleasant-smelling vaginal discharge, or bleeding that is heavy or increasing.

Seek emergency care for chest pain, breathing difficulty, coughing blood, fainting, a new swollen or painful leg, sudden severe abdominal pain, or uncontrolled bleeding. These symptoms can indicate a blood clot, internal bleeding, or another postoperative complication.

Ask what was found during surgery, whether pathology results are available, and how the operation changes future screening. Confirm the plan for lifting, driving, work, exercise, and sex, plus whom to contact outside clinic hours. If your ovaries were removed, discuss menopausal symptoms and suitable treatment options.
