Short answer

Postpartum depression can begin or continue two months after birth, and persistent low mood, loss of interest, anxiety, guilt, or difficulty functioning deserves prompt professional support.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How postpartum depression can feel

Postpartum depression is more sustained and disruptive than short-lived emotional changes soon after delivery. It can present with sadness, emptiness, irritability, loss of pleasure, intense worry, poor concentration, hopelessness, guilt, or feeling disconnected from the baby. Sleep may remain difficult even when the baby is settled, and appetite or sexual interest may change. Symptoms can develop gradually, and having them does not mean you are a bad parent. Partners and other caregivers can also develop depression after a birth.

How to get support

Tell a trusted person today and contact your family doctor, obstetric clinician, midwife, or a perinatal mental health service. Describe how long symptoms have lasted, their effect on sleep and daily care, and whether you have frightening or unwanted thoughts. Support may include talking therapy, practical help, peer support, and medication when appropriate. A clinician can discuss options compatible with breastfeeding and check for physical contributors such as anaemia or thyroid problems. Accepting help with meals, rest, household tasks, or baby care can create space for treatment and recovery.

When immediate help is needed

Call local emergency services or go to an emergency department now if you might harm yourself or the baby, cannot keep either of you safe, feel severely confused, hear or see things others do not, or hold unusual fixed beliefs. Stay with a trusted adult and do not remain alone with these symptoms. Sudden severe agitation, confusion, hallucinations, or rapidly changing behaviour after birth may indicate postpartum psychosis, which is a medical emergency.

Topics to raise with your clinician

Ask how your symptoms will be assessed, which treatment choices match their severity, and how soon progress will be reviewed. Discuss breastfeeding, current medicines, past depression or bipolar disorder, sleep, and the support available at home. Request a clear crisis plan with named contacts in case your mood or thoughts worsen.

Questions people ask

Can postpartum depression start two months after delivery?

Yes. Symptoms can start gradually after the early post-birth period or may have been present earlier and become more noticeable as demands build.

Can I be treated while breastfeeding?

Treatment options are available during breastfeeding. A clinician can weigh your symptoms, feeding preferences, medical history, and the properties of any medicine with you.

What if I have unwanted thoughts but do not want to act on them?

Tell a healthcare professional clearly what the thoughts involve and whether you feel able to keep yourself and the baby safe. Intrusive thoughts can be distressing, and an assessment helps determine the right support and urgency.
