Bleeding two days after sex

The timing alone cannot identify the source. Note whether blood appears only when wiping or requires menstrual protection, and check whether it could be a period or bleeding from the urinary or bowel area.

Friction can irritate delicate vaginal or cervical tissue, particularly when there was dryness. Genitourinary syndrome of menopause can cause dryness and fragile tissue that bleeds with contact. Cervical inflammation, including inflammation related to chlamydia, can also present with bleeding after sex.

Cervical dysplasia, cervical cancer, and vaginal cancer can present with bleeding after sex, but this symptom has several non-cancerous explanations. An examination is the way to locate the bleeding and decide whether infection testing, cervical screening, or another investigation is appropriate.

Record the colour, amount, start time, and whether bleeding is changing. Include pelvic pain, unusual discharge, odour, itching, pain during sex, urinary symptoms, your last period, contraception, pregnancy possibility, and any medicines that affect bleeding.

Arrange a healthcare appointment if bleeding continues, happens again after sex, occurs after menopause, or is unexplained. Until soreness settles, avoid further penetration if it triggers pain or fresh bleeding. If infection is possible, pause sex or use barrier protection until you receive testing advice.

Seek urgent medical care for heavy or increasing bleeding, severe pelvic or abdominal pain, fainting, dizziness, marked weakness, fever, or feeling acutely unwell. If pregnancy is possible, bleeding with one-sided pain, shoulder-tip pain, or faintness needs urgent assessment.

Bleeding after menopause should be checked even when it is light or stops. Recurrent post-sex bleeding also needs a clinical review rather than repeated self-treatment for dryness or presumed infection.

Ask where the blood appears to be coming from, whether you need a pregnancy or infection test, and whether your cervical screening is up to date. If dryness is present, ask which moisturiser, lubricant, or prescription treatment suits your medical history.
