What to know 2 days after a frozen embryo transfer

A pregnancy test at this point is too early to give a dependable answer. Follow the test date provided by your fertility clinic.

The embryo may be continuing its early development and may be approaching, beginning or progressing through implantation. The exact timing varies with the embryo's developmental stage at transfer, so there is no sensation that confirms what is happening.

Mild cramping, bloating, breast tenderness, tiredness or light spotting can occur, but having these symptoms or having none of them does not predict the outcome. Progesterone and other fertility medicines can cause many of the same changes.

Take progesterone and any other prescribed medicine at the scheduled times. Do not stop treatment because of spotting, cramping or a home test unless your fertility team tells you to do so. If a dose is missed, contact the clinic for instructions rather than doubling it without advice.

Gentle everyday movement is generally appropriate; bed rest does not keep an embryo in place. Follow your clinic's specific guidance about exercise, sex, bathing, travel and work, particularly if you also had another procedure or have a medical condition. Avoid starting medicines, supplements or herbal products without checking that they are suitable during fertility treatment.

Contact your fertility clinic promptly for bleeding heavier than light spotting, worsening pelvic or abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, fever, faintness, marked abdominal swelling, reduced urination or trouble breathing. Seek emergency care for severe pain, heavy bleeding, fainting, chest pain or significant breathing difficulty.

For milder symptoms that concern you, tell the clinic what you feel, when it began and whether it is changing. Their advice can account for your medicines, transfer details and other health conditions.

Confirm the date and type of pregnancy test, how long each medicine should continue, and whom to call outside clinic hours. You can also ask which activities are appropriate for your circumstances and what to do if bleeding begins or a medicine dose is late.
