Short answer

Light spotting at 12 weeks can have several causes, but any bleeding in pregnancy should be discussed promptly with your maternity team.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

First step
Contact your maternity team promptly for individual advice.
Useful detail
Record the colour, amount, timing and associated symptoms.
Emergency signs
Heavy bleeding, severe pain, fainting or feeling markedly unwell.

The short answer

A clinician can interpret the bleeding alongside pain, discharge, your medical history and, when appropriate, an examination or ultrasound.

What spotting may mean

Spotting means a small amount of blood, often noticed on underwear or toilet tissue. In pregnancy, bleeding may come from a sensitive cervix, including after sex or an examination. Infection and pregnancy-related problems can also cause bleeding, so colour or amount alone cannot confirm the cause.

Note whether the blood is pink, red or brown and whether you also have cramps, one-sided pain, fever, unusual discharge or feel unwell. These details help the maternity team decide what assessment is needed.

What to do now

Contact your maternity unit, obstetrician or early-pregnancy service and describe the bleeding and any accompanying symptoms. Use a sanitary pad rather than a tampon so you can monitor the flow, and avoid sex until you have received individual advice if it appears to trigger bleeding.

Tell the clinician if you know your blood group is Rh-negative, because bleeding can affect whether additional treatment is considered. Do not stop prescribed pregnancy medicines unless the clinician managing them tells you to.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent medical care if bleeding becomes heavy, you soak pads, pass clots or tissue, develop severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, dizziness, fainting, fever, or feel markedly unwell. Call local emergency services if you faint, have severe pain, or cannot travel safely.

Even without these warning signs, arrange prompt advice for new spotting, repeated episodes or bleeding that continues. Urgency depends on symptoms and clinical assessment, not on whether a possible cause is common.

Questions for your clinician

Ask whether you need an examination, urine or blood testing, or an ultrasound; where to go if bleeding increases; whether your blood group changes management; and whether to adjust exercise, sex, travel or medicines while symptoms are being assessed.

Questions people ask

Can brown spotting happen at 12 weeks?

Brown spotting can represent older blood, but its colour does not establish the cause. Report it to your maternity team, especially if it persists, returns or occurs with pain or other symptoms.

Should I use a tampon for spotting during pregnancy?

A sanitary pad is preferable while you monitor bleeding because it makes the amount easier to observe. Seek personalised advice if the bleeding continues or increases.

Will I need an ultrasound?

That depends on the bleeding, associated symptoms, pregnancy history and previous scan findings. The assessing clinician will decide whether ultrasound or other checks are appropriate.
