Low milk supply at 11 months

Short answer
At eleven months, softer breasts or shorter feeds do not by themselves prove low milk supply; assess feeding, output, growth and recent changes together.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Breast feel
- Softness alone is not evidence of inadequate production.
- Pump output
- The amount expressed in one session does not equal total daily supply.
- Assessment
- Feeding effectiveness, hydration and growth give more useful context.
The main point
An older baby may feed efficiently, become distracted or take more solid food, so pumping volume and breast fullness can change without showing exactly how much milk the baby receives.
What may be behind the change
Fewer breastfeeds, longer gaps, a new sleep pattern, illness, stress, return of menstrual cycles, pregnancy, discomfort during feeding or ineffective milk removal may reduce stimulation. Some cold remedies, hormonal medicines and other products can also affect supply for some parents.
Clues that deserve a fuller assessment include fewer wet nappies than usual, persistent frustration at feeds, difficulty swallowing milk, faltering growth or a noticeable decline after a schedule or medication change. A single pump session is not a dependable measure of total production.
Ways to support feeding
Offer the breast regularly when the baby shows feeding cues and allow active feeding before switching sides. Quiet surroundings and skin-to-skin contact may help a distracted baby settle. Check that positioning is comfortable and that you can hear or see effective swallowing.
If feeds are replaced or the baby does not remove milk well, expressing may help maintain stimulation. Review new medicines with a clinician or pharmacist rather than stopping prescribed treatment. A lactation professional can observe a feed, review pump fit and consider the baby’s growth pattern.
When to arrange medical care
Seek prompt paediatric advice if the baby has clearly fewer wet nappies, a dry mouth, unusual sleepiness, weakness, repeated vomiting, difficulty feeding or concern about growth. Urgent care is needed if the baby is hard to wake, has breathing difficulty or cannot keep fluids down.
For the breastfeeding parent, obtain same-day advice for a hot, painful breast with fever or worsening flu-like symptoms. A painful lump that is not settling, nipple damage or ongoing feeding pain also warrants assessment.
Questions to bring to an assessment
Ask whether the baby’s growth and hydration are reassuring, whether latch or oral movement needs checking, and whether a recent medicine could affect milk production. Bring a short note of feeding patterns, wet nappies, solid foods and any recent illness or routine change.

Questions people ask
Does eating solids mean breastfeeding must stop?
No. Breastfeeding can continue alongside age-appropriate family foods. The pattern may change as the baby eats and drinks in new ways.
Can I use a supplement to increase milk?
Check first with a clinician or pharmacist. Herbal and medicinal products can cause side effects or interact with treatment, and correcting milk removal may be more relevant.
Who can check whether milk transfer is effective?
A trained lactation professional can watch a feed and assess positioning, latch, swallowing, comfort and the wider feeding history.
