Tiredness at 10 weeks pregnant

Short answer
Marked tiredness is common at 10 weeks pregnant, but exhaustion with breathlessness, faintness, fever, or other concerning symptoms needs assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common contributors
- Hormonal change, disturbed sleep, nausea, reduced food intake, and dehydration.
- Pacing
- Alternate essential tasks with brief rests instead of pushing through exhaustion.
- Worth checking
- Fatigue with pallor, breathlessness, or palpitations may need assessment for anaemia.
The short answer
Early pregnancy changes can increase the need for sleep while nausea, disrupted nights, and eating less can drain energy further. What matters is whether the fatigue is manageable and isolated or is rapidly worsening and accompanied by signs of illness.
Why energy can drop
Hormonal shifts, increased work by the circulation, poor-quality sleep, and the physical demands of early pregnancy can all contribute. Vomiting or low fluid intake may add dehydration, which often presents with thirst, headache, dizziness, dark urine, or reduced urination.
Anaemia can present with fatigue together with pallor, breathlessness, dizziness, headaches, or a racing heartbeat. Infection may instead bring fever, cough, body aches, urinary symptoms, or diarrhoea. A clinician can use your symptom pattern and, when appropriate, blood or urine checks to look for a treatable cause.
Managing low energy
Build short rests into the day, keep a regular sleep routine, and reduce non-essential demands while energy is low. Eat small balanced meals or snacks if nausea makes larger meals difficult, and sip fluids regularly rather than waiting until you feel very thirsty.
Gentle movement can help stiffness and sleep when you feel well enough, but stop if you become dizzy, breathless, painful, or unwell. Do not start iron or stimulant products solely for tiredness without professional advice; excess supplementation can cause problems and may hide the real reason for symptoms.
Signs that need medical care
Seek urgent help for fainting, severe breathlessness, chest pain, confusion, new weakness on one side, heavy bleeding, or severe abdominal pain. If you cannot keep fluids down, have very little urine, or feel increasingly drowsy, prompt assessment is also needed.
Book a clinical review if fatigue is steadily worsening, disrupts basic daily activities, or comes with pallor, persistent palpitations, fever, weight loss, low mood, or loss of interest. Mention dietary restrictions and any history of anaemia, thyroid problems, kidney disease, or recent infection.
Preparing for your visit
Ask whether your symptoms warrant checks for anaemia, thyroid function, infection, or dehydration; whether your prenatal supplement provides what you need; and which activity level is appropriate. Bring a note of sleep, fluid intake, vomiting, diet, bleeding, and medicines.

Questions people ask
Is it normal to need much more sleep at 10 weeks pregnant?
An increased need for sleep can occur in early pregnancy. Seek advice if rest does not help or tiredness is severe, worsening, or accompanied by other symptoms.
Could tiredness be caused by anaemia?
Anaemia often presents with fatigue and may also cause pallor, breathlessness, dizziness, headache, or palpitations. A clinician can decide whether a blood check is appropriate.
Should I take extra iron for low energy?
Only take additional iron after a clinician has considered your needs and current prenatal supplement. Fatigue has several possible causes, and unnecessary iron can cause side effects.
