What miscarriage at around 10 weeks may involve

Bleeding, clots, lower abdominal cramps, fluid or tissue passing from the vagina can occur, but some losses cause few symptoms and are found on ultrasound. Bleeding or pain at this stage does not establish miscarriage by itself; other causes, including ectopic pregnancy, must sometimes be excluded.

A clinician may use an abdominal or transvaginal ultrasound to check the pregnancy's location and development. Pregnancy hormone blood tests can add information when the scan is uncertain. If dates or findings are unclear and you are stable, a repeat scan may be needed before a final diagnosis.

Medical records may use the terms embryo or fetus according to developmental stage. Whatever language appears in the report, the loss can be deeply significant, and you can ask staff to use wording that feels manageable to you.

Once miscarriage is confirmed, the care team may offer expectant management, medicine, or a procedure to empty the uterus. Your clinical condition, the amount of tissue remaining, signs of infection and personal preference help shape the decision. Ask how each choice may affect pain, bleeding, follow-up and time away from usual activities.

During recovery, follow the discharge instructions and use the recommended pain relief. Keep track of bleeding and symptoms, attend any follow-up test or scan, and seek emotional support if you want it. Discuss your blood group and whether any additional medicine is indicated in your individual circumstances.

Get emergency help if bleeding becomes heavy, pain is severe or sudden, or you feel faint, dizzy, breathless or close to collapse. Shoulder-tip pain also warrants emergency assessment because it can accompany internal bleeding. Fever, chills, worsening tenderness, unpleasant-smelling discharge, or feeling increasingly unwell require prompt contact with your pregnancy or gynaecology service.

Ask how certain the diagnosis is, whether all pregnancy tissue has passed, and what follow-up will confirm recovery. Request precise instructions for the expected bleeding pattern and suitable pain medicine.
