Snoring in a 10-month-old baby

Short answer
Occasional snoring during nasal congestion may settle, but frequent snoring or disrupted breathing deserves clinical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Track the pattern
- Note whether snoring is occasional, illness-related or present on most nights.
- Safer sleep
- Use a flat, firm, clear sleep surface and place the baby on their back.
- Useful evidence
- A short recording can show sound, chest movement and pauses to the clinician.
The short answer
Snoring is vibration of tissues as air moves through a narrowed upper airway. A cold or blocked nose can temporarily narrow that passage. The pattern matters: note whether the sound occurs only during an illness or on most nights, and whether sleep remains calm and continuous.
What the sleep pattern may show
Obstructive sleep apnoea can present with habitual snoring, pauses, gasping, restless sleep or increased breathing effort. Snoring by itself does not establish that diagnosis. Persistent nasal inflammation, including allergic rhinitis, can also present with congestion and noisy breathing.
Observe the baby's chest and colour as well as listening. A brief recording can help a clinician hear the sound and see the breathing pattern, provided making it does not delay urgent help. Also note mouth breathing, sweating, frequent waking and daytime irritability.
Practical steps for sleep and congestion
If the nose is blocked, plain saline drops and gentle nasal suction before sleep may help. Keep the room free from tobacco smoke, vaping, incense and heavy fragrance. Wash bedding regularly and discuss persistent dust or pet-related symptoms with the baby's clinician.
Always place the baby on their back on a flat, firm sleep surface with no pillows, wedges or positioners. Do not prop the mattress or put the baby to sleep in a car seat to reduce snoring. Avoid non-prescribed decongestants, antihistamines and sleep remedies.
Breathing signs that need attention
Call emergency services if breathing stops or repeatedly pauses, the lips turn blue or grey, the chest pulls in severely, or the baby is limp or difficult to wake. Seek urgent help for choking or marked breathing difficulty while awake as well.
Book a clinical assessment if snoring happens frequently, continues after nasal symptoms resolve, includes gasping or restless sleep, or is accompanied by poor feeding or concerning growth. The clinician may examine the nose, mouth and throat and decide whether further sleep or airway assessment is needed.
Points to cover with the clinician
Ask whether the recording shows increased breathing effort, whether nasal symptoms need treatment, and what would justify an airway or sleep evaluation. Describe how many nights are affected, the baby's usual sleep position, recent infections, feeding pattern and any witnessed pauses or colour change.

Questions people ask
Is occasional snoring during a cold concerning?
Temporary nasal blockage can cause snoring. Monitor breathing, colour, feeding and sleep, and seek assessment if the noise persists after the congestion clears.
Should I move my baby onto their side to stop snoring?
No. Put the baby to sleep on their back on a firm, flat, clear surface, without wedges or pillows.
Does every baby who snores have sleep apnoea?
No. Obstructive sleep apnoea can present with snoring, but diagnosis depends on the wider breathing and sleep pattern and a clinical assessment.
