A previous miscarriage does not by itself explain a delay in conception. Fertility depends on ovulation, sperm, the fallopian tubes, the uterus, timing of intercourse, age, health conditions, and medicines, so assessment commonly considers both partners.

Regular periods can suggest ovulation but do not confirm that every fertility factor is working normally. Irregular or absent periods may point to inconsistent ovulation, while pelvic pain, previous infection, endometriosis symptoms, or earlier pelvic surgery can guide further evaluation.

For a partner producing sperm, semen quality can change and is assessed directly rather than inferred from general health. Sometimes several modest factors coexist, and sometimes initial tests do not identify a single explanation.

Book an appointment with a gynaecology or fertility service. Bring menstrual dates, how long you have had regular unprotected intercourse, previous pregnancy records, operations, infections, current medicines, and any home ovulation information.

Evaluation may include medical histories for both partners, semen analysis, tests related to ovulation, and assessment of the uterus or fallopian tubes. The clinician can tailor the sequence to your symptoms and prior care rather than repeating tests without a clear purpose.

While waiting, avoid smoking, review medicines and supplements with a clinician, take the recommended pre-pregnancy folic acid, and have intercourse regularly through the cycle without making a single predicted ovulation day the sole opportunity.

Seek evaluation without further waiting if periods are absent or very irregular, pelvic pain is persistent, intercourse is painful, there is bleeding between periods, or either partner has a known reproductive condition or previous treatment that may affect fertility.

Urgent care is appropriate for a positive pregnancy test accompanied by heavy bleeding, severe one-sided pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, or marked dizziness. Urgency comes from these warning symptoms, not from the length of time spent trying to conceive.

Ask which tests are appropriate for each partner, what each result can clarify, and whether imaging of the uterus or tubes is indicated. Discuss when results will be reviewed, what treatment choices could follow, and what emotional support is available after pregnancy loss and fertility stress.
