Snoring in a one-month-old baby

Short answer
Occasional snoring-like noise can come from a young baby's narrow nose, but persistent or laboured breathing needs medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Helpful evidence
- A short video showing the baby's face, chest, and breathing sound
- Safe sleep
- Flat on the back on a firm, clear surface
- Emergency signs
- Colour change, prolonged pause, severe breathing effort, floppiness, or difficulty waking
What snoring-like sounds may mean
Babies often sound congested because their nasal passages are small. The useful distinction is not the loudness alone, but whether the sound comes with pauses, chest pulling, colour change, feeding difficulty, poor alertness, or reduced wet nappies.
Distinguishing snoring from breathing difficulty
True snoring is a vibration from airflow through a narrowed upper airway during sleep. Other infant noises may come from the nose, throat, or voice box and can sound similar without being snoring.
Obstructive sleep apnoea can present with repeated snoring, breathing pauses, gasping, or disrupted sleep, but a recording and clinical examination are needed to assess the pattern. Allergic rhinitis, chronic sinusitis, and obesity are not assumptions to make from one-month-old noisy breathing.
What parents can do safely
Watch your baby while awake and asleep, note whether the noise changes with position or feeding, and record a short video showing the face and chest for the clinician. Count wet nappies and note any coughing, choking, sweating, or tiring during feeds.
Keep the sleep space smoke-free and place your baby flat on their back on a firm, clear surface. Do not prop up the mattress, use sleep positioners, insert cotton buds into the nose, or give decongestants. If dried nasal mucus is visible, ask a clinician or pharmacist about age-appropriate saline care.
When to seek urgent help
Call emergency services if your baby turns blue or grey, has a prolonged breathing pause, is struggling for each breath, becomes floppy, or is difficult to wake. Grunting, nostril flaring, ribs pulling in, or a harsh noise while breathing in also warrants urgent assessment.
Arrange prompt medical review if the noise is present most sleeps, is getting louder, repeatedly interrupts feeding, or occurs with poor weight gain, vomiting, fever, cough, or fewer wet nappies. Because the baby is only one month old, new breathing concerns should be assessed with a low threshold.
What to ask at the review
Ask where the sound seems to originate, whether breathing and oxygenation appear normal, and whether feeding or growth is affected. Clarify which changes should prompt emergency care and whether follow-up, airway assessment, or sleep observation is needed.

Questions people ask
Is every snoring sound sleep apnoea?
No. Several nasal and throat sounds can resemble snoring. Repeated pauses, gasping, colour change, or disrupted feeding make medical assessment more urgent.
Can I raise the cot mattress to help?
No. Keep the sleep surface flat, firm, and clear, and place your baby on their back. Inclined products and sleep positioners can create hazards.
Will a video help the appointment?
Yes. A brief recording can show the timing, sound, chest movement, and colour, which may not be present during the examination.
