A stomach bug lasting one day: care and warning signs

Gastroenteritis can present with sudden diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps, fever, or reduced appetite. Symptoms improving within a day can be reassuring, although the cause cannot be identified from duration alone.

A short illness may follow a viral infection, contaminated food, or another temporary irritation of the digestive tract. Similar symptoms can also occur with medicine effects or conditions outside the gut, so consider the whole pattern rather than assuming every episode is infectious.

Vomiting and watery stools remove fluid and salts. Dehydration may present with a dry mouth, marked thirst, dizziness, unusual tiredness, dark urine, or passing urine less often.

Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration solution, especially if larger drinks trigger vomiting. When appetite returns, choose manageable foods and increase variety as tolerated. Rest, wash hands carefully with soap and water, and avoid preparing food for others while vomiting or diarrhoea continues.

Do not begin antibiotics or anti-diarrhoeal medicine without suitable advice. A pharmacist or clinician can check whether a product is appropriate for your age, pregnancy status, symptoms, and current medicines.

Get urgent help for fainting, confusion, severe or localised abdominal pain, blood in vomit or stool, green vomit, a rigid or swollen abdomen, or inability to keep fluids down. Babies, older adults, pregnant people, and anyone with reduced immunity or significant long-term illness should have a lower threshold for assessment.

Contact a clinician if symptoms are worsening, urine output is falling, fever is accompanied by marked weakness, or recovery does not continue. Urgency comes from these warning signs and the person's vulnerability, not from whether the illness has lasted exactly one day.

Ask whether you need examination or testing, how to replace fluids safely, whether your regular medicines should be adjusted while you are vomiting, and what changes should trigger urgent care. Mention recent travel, shared meals, sick contacts, pregnancy, antibiotics, and any blood or mucus in the stool.
