One-day sick leave medical certificate: what to expect

The certificate records the clinician's professional assessment; it is not automatically provided simply because it is requested. The clinician may ask when symptoms began, what duties you could not perform, whether you received treatment, and whether you are ready to return.

A medical certificate supports an absence from work on health grounds for the period judged appropriate during the consultation. It does not necessarily disclose a diagnosis, and it does not replace your employer's process for reporting absence.

Whether a certificate can cover a day that has already passed depends on the clinician's assessment and the applicable workplace and health-authority requirements. Give an accurate timeline rather than changing dates to fit an administrative request.

Arrange a GP consultation and bring identification plus any relevant test results, prescriptions, discharge notes, or earlier consultation details. Describe your symptoms, their start and effect on your duties, medicines taken, and any ongoing health condition.

Tell your workplace promptly that you are unwell and check its submission method and deadline. Keep the original or a secure copy. Do not alter the document; contact the issuing clinic if a name, date, or other detail is incorrect.

The certificate is secondary to your health. Seek urgent medical help for severe trouble breathing, chest pain, fainting, new confusion, weakness on one side, uncontrolled bleeding, or a rapidly worsening condition. For persistent exhaustion, sleep disturbance, anxiety, or reduced ability to function, arrange a clinical review rather than treating the issue only as paperwork.

You can ask what period the assessment supports, whether follow-up is needed, which warning signs should change your plan, and when you can safely resume normal duties. If your job involves driving, machinery, food handling, or close contact with vulnerable people, explain this because the nature of the work can affect return-to-work advice.
