An otoscope uses light and magnification to view the opening of the ear canal and, when the view is clear, the eardrum. Consumer devices may include a camera and screen. A picture can be limited by earwax, movement, moisture, glare, or the angle of the tip. Appearance alone cannot reliably establish the cause of pain, hearing change, discharge, or fever. Clinicians combine the view with symptoms, examination findings, and the person’s age and medical history.

Read the device instructions and clean only the parts the manufacturer identifies as reusable. Sit still in good light and stop if insertion feels painful or meets resistance. Never push a tip deeply, probe around wax, or use the device to remove an object from the ear. For a child, avoid trying to examine a moving or distressed child; a child health consultation is safer when an ear needs assessment. Keep any recording only as supporting information for a clinician, not as a reason to delay care.

Arrange a GP consultation for persistent ear pain, reduced hearing, ringing, discharge, a blocked sensation, or symptoms that recur. Seek urgent care for severe pain, swelling or redness behind the ear, blood or pus from the ear, sudden hearing loss, marked dizziness, a high fever with significant illness, or an object or battery in the ear. Do not insert an otoscope after an injury to the ear unless a clinician has advised it.

Ask whether wax or another finding is obscuring the view, whether the eardrum can be seen clearly, and which symptoms would change the follow-up plan. If using a home device, ask how to avoid injury and whether photographs would be useful at a future appointment.
