What retinal means

Retinal, also called retinaldehyde, is a vitamin A derivative used in leave-on skincare. Skin converts it through a short pathway into retinoic acid, the form that acts on skin cells. This activity may help normalise shedding, soften the look of fine lines and reduce the appearance of clogged pores over time. It can also make skin more reactive to other active ingredients.

Dryness, tightness, mild peeling or temporary redness can occur when your skin is adjusting. These effects do not prove that a product is working, and marked burning or swelling is a reason to stop and seek advice.

How to use it thoughtfully

Patch-test a small amount first, then apply a pea-sized quantity to clean, completely dry skin at night. Begin on occasional nights and increase only if your skin remains comfortable. Use moisturiser before or after it if you are prone to dryness, and keep it away from eyelids, the corners of the nose and lips.

Wear broad-spectrum sunscreen during the day and avoid adding exfoliating acids, scrubs or another retinoid at the same time until you know your tolerance. Check the product directions and ask a clinician before use during pregnancy or while trying to conceive.

When to seek care

Stop using the product and contact a healthcare professional for intense burning, blistering, facial swelling, a spreading rash or eye symptoms. Arrange a skin assessment if persistent acne, dark marks or irritation is not settling after you simplify your routine.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether retinal suits your skin condition, how often to start, which products to pause, and whether your current medicines or pregnancy plans change the advice.

Questions people ask

Can retinal cause peeling?

Yes. Dryness or mild peeling can happen during adjustment; reduce frequency and moisturise, and stop for severe irritation.

Can I combine retinal with niacinamide?

They may be used in the same routine by some people, but introduce one change at a time and stop if irritation develops.
