Rash After a Yellow Fever Vaccine

A rash can have several causes, including irritation near the injection site, a coincidental skin condition, or an allergic reaction. Its appearance alone does not identify the cause. Note where it began, whether it is spreading, whether it is itchy or painful, and what other symptoms are present.

Mild post-vaccination effects may include feeling unwell, headache, muscle aches, or a low fever. A rash together with facial swelling, throat tightness, wheeze, dizziness, or fainting needs emergency assessment because these may be features of a serious allergic reaction.

Contact the vaccination provider for advice about a new rash, particularly if it is widespread, becoming more uncomfortable, or accompanied by fever or other illness. Take clear photographs in good light and record when symptoms started; this can help a clinician assess changes without delaying in-person care when needed.

Avoid taking a new medicine or using a strong skin product solely to cover the rash before you have discussed it with a clinician, especially if you have other symptoms. Keep your vaccine record available when you seek advice.

Call emergency services or seek urgent medical care immediately for trouble breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, widespread hives, collapse, marked drowsiness, confusion, severe weakness, or a high fever. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or have breathing difficulty.

Ask what may be causing the rash, whether it changes plans for future vaccines, and which symptoms should prompt urgent review. Tell the clinician about allergies, new medicines, recent infections, and any skin conditions you already have.
