Yellow fever and meningitis vaccine

Yellow fever is spread by mosquitoes in certain regions, while meningococcal disease is spread through close respiratory contact. Your itinerary may create a reason to consider one vaccine, the other, or both. Entry requirements can also differ from the health risks at your destination, so a vaccination certificate request does not replace a personal travel-health assessment.

A clinician will review your route, departure date, previous vaccines, age, health conditions, medicines and history of severe allergies. Yellow fever vaccination uses a live, weakened virus vaccine, which makes those details particularly relevant.

Arrange a travel consultation early enough to discuss timing and any documentation. Bring your immunisation record and a list of medicines. Tell the clinician about immune-system treatment, a thymus disorder, previous reactions to vaccines, pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Use mosquito-bite prevention alongside any travel vaccines: cover exposed skin when practical, use an appropriate repellent, and choose screened or air-conditioned accommodation where available.

Seek urgent medical care after vaccination for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, widespread hives, fainting that does not quickly settle, or a severe new illness. During or after travel, urgent assessment is needed for fever with severe headache, a stiff neck, confusion, a rash, yellowing of the eyes or skin, or repeated vomiting.

Ask whether each vaccine is recommended for your exact route, whether any border documentation applies, and whether your medical history changes the plan. Ask what side effects are expected and which symptoms need prompt assessment.
