Yeast skin rash treatment: what to know

Yeast thrives in warm, damp areas and can cause itch, burning, soreness, scaling or a moist red patch. The same symptoms can come from irritation, heat rash, intertrigo, eczema, psoriasis or ringworm. A pharmacist may help with a mild, typical rash, while a clinician may examine the skin or test a sample when the pattern is unclear. Treating the wrong cause can prolong irritation, so avoid assuming that every rash is fungal.

Clean the affected skin gently and dry by patting, including the crease between touching surfaces. Use loose, breathable clothing and change damp garments promptly. Follow the directions for any recommended antifungal cream, lotion or powder, including where and how often to apply it. Keep the product away from eyes and broken skin unless directed. Do not add steroid, antibiotic or herbal creams without advice; combinations can irritate skin or obscure the diagnosis.

Seek an assessment when advised treatment does not help, the rash repeatedly returns or the skin is deeply cracked.
