What should you know about Xyzal for hives?

Hives are raised, itchy welts caused by release of histamine and other inflammatory signals in the skin. Xyzal, whose active ingredient is levocetirizine, blocks histamine at its receptor and can lessen itching and wheals. It does not identify the trigger or treat every cause of a rash. Individual welts often fade and appear elsewhere, while ongoing episodes may need a structured treatment plan.

Drowsiness, tiredness, dry mouth, or headache can occur. Kidney problems, pregnancy, breastfeeding, alcohol, and other medicines may affect whether it is appropriate or how it should be taken.

Follow the package or clinician's directions and do not take extra doses because the rash is uncomfortable. Check combination cold or allergy products to avoid duplicating antihistamines. Until you know how you react, take care with driving and other tasks requiring alertness. Keep a record of foods, medicines, infections, heat, pressure, or new products that preceded an episode, but do not delay urgent care while searching for a trigger. Persistent hives should be reviewed, especially when they interfere with sleep or daily activity.

Call emergency services immediately for swelling of the lips, tongue, mouth, or throat; trouble breathing or swallowing; wheezing; dizziness; or fainting. These symptoms can accompany angioedema or a serious allergic reaction. Arrange medical review for a rash with fever, bruising, painful lesions, blistering, or swelling that lasts, and when hives keep returning despite treatment.
