Why is weight-bearing CT used in a musculoskeletal CT scan?

A conventional scan often captures the body in a supported position. A weight-bearing study adds information about the relationship between bones when gravity and body weight act through the joint. This may help the clinician assess alignment, joint space, bone shape, collapse, or instability in areas such as the foot, ankle, or knee. The images can support decisions about diagnosis, treatment planning, and whether a problem changes with loading.

The scan does not reproduce every movement or activity. It is a short snapshot in a controlled position, and the radiology team may ask you to stand or place the requested limb on a platform. The team considers the images alongside your symptoms, examination, previous imaging, and medical history.

Wear clothing without bulky metal and follow the imaging centre’s instructions. Tell staff if you are pregnant or may be pregnant, cannot stand safely, have severe pain, or need help transferring. During the scan, keep the requested position and remain still when asked. A weight-bearing CT does not replace a clinical examination, and a normal-looking image does not automatically explain every source of pain.

Seek urgent medical help for a limb that becomes suddenly cold, pale, numb, or weak, severe pain after an injury with visible deformity, or new inability to bear weight. Contact your clinician soon for worsening swelling, persistent night pain, or symptoms that continue despite the advised plan. These concerns are assessed separately from the scan appointment.

Ask which joint will be loaded, what the scan is intended to clarify, whether you should bring earlier images, how the result may change treatment, and when you can expect the report to be discussed.
