Short answer

Sterile wound dressing is used for a minor burn to protect damaged skin, limit contamination and prevent the area from sticking to clothing.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main purpose
Protects exposed, tender skin from contact and contamination
Fit
Loose enough to avoid pressure on the burned area
Avoid
Ice, greasy home remedies and adhesive material on the burn

How a dressing helps a burn

Burned skin can be tender and its normal protective barrier may be disrupted. A clean, non-adherent sterile dressing creates a physical cover over the area, shielding it from friction, dust and accidental contact. It may also absorb fluid from a blistered or weeping surface without pulling at the skin when it is changed. The dressing does not replace cooling a fresh burn with cool running water or clinical assessment when needed.

Practical care at home

After cooling the burn, remove rings, watches or tight items near the area if this can be done easily. Cover it loosely with a sterile non-fluffy dressing or clean cling film laid over the skin; do not wrap tightly. Avoid ice, butter, toothpaste, adhesive dressings and popping blisters. Keep the cover clean and dry, and follow the instructions you were given about changing it. Pain relief may be appropriate for some people; a pharmacist or clinician can help you choose safely.

When a burn needs urgent assessment

Seek urgent medical care for a burn that is deep, white, charred, numb, chemical or electrical, or involves the face, hands, feet, genitals or a major joint. Get advice for a large burn, a burn that circles a limb, or any concern involving a young child or a person with reduced sensation. Increasing redness beyond the burn, worsening pain, swelling, pus, fever or feeling unwell can indicate a problem and should be assessed.

Questions worth asking

Ask which dressing is suitable for the burn location, when it should be changed, whether the wound may be washed, and which changes in appearance should prompt a review. If tetanus vaccination is uncertain, ask whether it needs checking.

Questions people ask

Can I put a sterile dressing straight onto a fresh burn?

Cool the burn with cool running water first when appropriate, then cover it loosely. Do not use a dressing that sticks to the burn surface.

Should I remove a blister before applying a dressing?

Do not deliberately burst a blister. It can provide a natural cover, and a clinician can advise if it needs treatment.
