Why is a radial pressure wave device used in shockwave therapy?

The applicator rests against the skin while compressed air moves a small projectile inside the handpiece. Its contact with the applicator creates radial pressure waves that spread outward through the treated tissue. The clinician selects the contact point, pressure and pulse pattern according to the body region, diagnosis and your tolerance. The treatment may be used around tendons, fascia or other musculoskeletal tissues as part of a wider rehabilitation plan.

Radial waves are mechanical, not electrical, and they do not involve an injection or surgical cut. A session can feel tapping, pressure or discomfort, especially over a sensitive spot. The device does not replace diagnosis, load management or strengthening when those are needed.

Tell the therapist about pregnancy, blood-thinning medicines, a bleeding disorder, infection, reduced sensation, nerve problems or a recent injection or operation. Wear clothing that allows access to the area. After treatment, follow the activity plan and note how symptoms respond; temporary tenderness can occur. Ask when to resume intense exercise and which pain medicines are appropriate for you.

Tell the treating clinician if pain becomes severe, new numbness or weakness appears, or swelling and bruising continue to increase. Seek prompt medical assessment for fever, spreading redness, inability to use the limb or sudden severe pain after treatment. Chest pain or breathlessness requires urgent help.
