Why is q-switched laser used in laser toning?

Short answer

Q-switched laser is used in laser toning because its short pulses can target pigment in the skin while limiting heat delivered to nearby tissue.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How the treatment works

The device delivers brief bursts of selected light. Pigment absorbs part of this energy, which can break pigment into smaller particles that the body gradually clears. Laser toning commonly uses a lower-energy approach over repeated appointments, rather than trying to remove pigment in one intense session. The aim may be to soften uneven colour, dull brown patches, or post-inflammatory marks while reducing unnecessary warming of the surrounding skin. Results depend on the type and depth of pigment, skin tone, sun exposure, and the cause of the discolouration.

This technology does not treat every dark mark in the same way. A clinician may first check whether a mark is melasma, an active inflammatory condition, a mole, or another lesion before discussing treatment.

Preparing and caring for treated skin

Ask which pigment problem is being treated and whether a low-fluence plan is appropriate for your skin. Follow the clinic’s instructions about cleansing, moisturising, and sun protection. Avoid picking at temporary redness or darkening. Tell the clinician about recent tanning, medicines that increase light sensitivity, active irritation, and any history of pigment becoming darker after inflammation. A patch test or gradual treatment plan may be considered when the response is uncertain.

When to contact the clinic

Contact the treating clinic if swelling, blistering, crusting, marked pain, or worsening colour change develops instead of settling. Prompt assessment is also sensible if a treated spot changes in shape, bleeds, or remains unlike the surrounding skin, because a laser session should not replace evaluation of a suspicious lesion.

Questions for your doctor

Which diagnosis is causing my uneven pigmentation? What energy setting and treatment interval do you recommend for my skin tone? Could this treatment worsen melasma or post-inflammatory pigmentation? What symptoms should I report after the session?

Questions people ask

Does laser toning remove all pigmentation in one visit?

Usually, laser toning is planned as a series of controlled treatments, and the response varies with the pigment’s cause and depth.

Can every dark spot be treated with q-switched laser?

No. A clinician should identify the lesion before treatment, especially when a mark is new or changing.
