Why is platelet-rich plasma used in a PRP injection?

PRP is made from a sample of your blood. A clinic processes the sample to separate and concentrate the platelet-containing portion, then injects it into a selected area such as a tendon, ligament, joint, or muscle. Platelets release signals involved in inflammation and tissue repair, which is why clinicians may consider PRP when ordinary healing is slow or symptoms persist. The preparation is not a universal treatment: its composition can vary, and the likely benefit depends on the condition, tissue, and injection plan.

Tell the clinician about blood disorders, medicines, infection, pregnancy, and allergies before treatment. Follow instructions about eating, drinking, and medicines; do not stop a prescribed medicine without advice. Afterward, protect the injected area for the period recommended, then begin the prescribed exercises or physiotherapy. Temporary soreness can occur. Keep follow-up appointments so symptoms, movement, and the rehabilitation plan can be reviewed.

Contact the treating clinic if pain or swelling keeps increasing, the injection site becomes hot or increasingly red, or you develop fever or drainage. Seek urgent care for severe allergic symptoms, rapidly spreading swelling, new weakness, or loss of sensation. A sudden severe change after an injection should be assessed rather than managed by changing medicines yourself.

Ask what condition the injection is intended to treat, where the PRP will be placed, how the preparation is made, and what evidence your clinician uses for that problem. Clarify expected soreness, activity restrictions, exercise timing, other treatment options, and when progress should be reviewed.
