Why are plates and screws used in osteotomy?

An osteotomy involves making a planned cut in a bone and changing its angle, position, or length. This can improve how a joint is loaded or correct a structural problem. Once the bone is repositioned, a plate follows its surface and screws anchor the corrected pieces. The fixation helps preserve the planned angle and reduces movement at the cut while healing occurs. The exact implant depends on the bone, the correction, bone quality, and whether a gap or wedge has been created. The plate is a stabilising tool, not the source of the correction itself.

Respect the limits on walking, lifting, and weight bearing, even when the incision looks settled. Use crutches, a brace, or a boot as directed, and keep the wound protected. Follow the rehabilitation plan for swelling, joint motion, and muscle strength. Attend scheduled examinations and imaging so alignment and bone healing can be reviewed. Do not adjust activity or remove support without speaking with the treating team.

Contact your team if pain, swelling, redness, or wound drainage is increasing, or if fever develops. Get urgent assessment for new loss of sensation or strength, a cold or discoloured foot or hand, severe pressure under a cast, or a sudden change in limb shape after an injury. Emergency help is needed for sudden breathlessness or chest pain.

Clarify weight-bearing stages, brace or crutch use, the rehabilitation schedule, how imaging will show healing, and which symptoms mean you should contact the team quickly.
