Why are plates and screws used in fracture fixation surgery?

A fracture can leave bone pieces shifted, shortened, or angled. After bringing the pieces into a planned position, the surgeon places a shaped plate against the bone and secures it with screws. The construct helps preserve alignment and provides stability for the body’s repair process. It can also allow earlier controlled movement of nearby joints when the surgeon considers that safe. Hardware choice varies with the bone, fracture pattern, soft-tissue condition, and bone strength. Fixation supports healing; it does not replace the bone’s own repair.

Use the operated limb only within the weight-bearing or movement limits given by your team. Keep the dressing and incision cared for as instructed, elevate the limb when advised, and attend imaging and rehabilitation appointments. Physiotherapy may focus on swelling control, joint movement, strength, and a gradual return to function. Do not remove a splint or increase activity because pain has eased; the fracture may still need protection.

Contact your surgical team promptly if pain or swelling is steadily worsening, the wound becomes red or drains, or you develop fever. Urgent assessment is needed for a cold, pale, blue, or unusually numb hand or foot, severe tightness, new weakness, or pain that is out of proportion. Emergency care is appropriate for chest pain, sudden breathlessness, or fainting.

Ask how the fracture was aligned, what the plate and screws are supporting, when partial or full weight bearing is allowed, and which exercises are suitable. Clarify how healing will be monitored, how long protection is expected, and which changes in circulation, sensation, or wound appearance require urgent help.
