Why is picosecond laser used in laser tattoo removal?

Tattoo ink sits within the skin, so removal needs energy that reaches pigment without treating the entire skin surface as one area. Picosecond technology delivers energy in extremely brief pulses. The rapid energy transfer creates a photoacoustic effect that fragments selected ink particles. The immune system can then gradually remove some of the fragmented material. Different ink colours, pigment depth, tattoo age, skin tone, location, and previous treatment all affect how a clinician plans the settings. Picosecond laser does not guarantee complete removal, and some pigment may respond unevenly.

Have the tattoo assessed in person so the clinician can identify its colours, location, texture, and any previous treatment. Protect the area from tanning before and after sessions, and disclose medicines, active skin conditions, a tendency to form raised scars, or a history of poor wound healing. Follow instructions about shaving, cleansing, and aftercare. Temporary redness, swelling, pinpoint bleeding, blistering, or lightening or darkening of the skin can occur. Do not pick at crusts or expose the treated area to avoidable friction.

Contact the treatment provider if pain, swelling, blistering, drainage, or redness is increasing rather than settling, or if the area becomes hot and tender. Seek urgent help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or a rapidly spreading rash. A change in skin colour that persists should be reviewed so future settings and aftercare can be adjusted.
