Why is a pedicle screw used in scoliosis surgery?

A pedicle is a strong bridge of bone at the back and sides of a vertebra. A screw placed through this structure can connect the vertebra to a rod. Together, the screws and rods provide points for correcting part of the spinal curve and maintaining alignment while bone graft forms a solid fusion between selected vertebrae. The number and position of screws depend on the curve, bone anatomy, age and surgical plan. Imaging and careful technique are used to avoid nearby nerves and other structures.

Before surgery, discuss the planned levels, the purpose of fusion, expected restrictions and the rehabilitation pathway. Tell the team about medicines, allergies, smoking, bone health and any recent infection. Afterward, follow lifting and bending limits, wound instructions and walking guidance. Keep follow-up appointments so the team can assess the incision, neurological function, alignment and progress toward fusion. Contact the team before changing activity because discomfort alone does not show whether the fusion is ready for extra load.

Seek prompt advice for increasing wound redness, drainage, fever, severe back pain, new numbness or weakness, or a change in walking. Get urgent medical help for loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin, sudden difficulty breathing, chest pain or rapidly progressing weakness. A small amount of soreness can accompany recovery, but new neurological symptoms need timely assessment.
