Why is an NB-UVB phototherapy cabin used?

Short answer
An NB-UVB phototherapy cabin is used to expose large or multiple skin areas evenly to a controlled band of ultraviolet light.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Light type
- Narrowband ultraviolet B
- Cabin benefit
- Even exposure over several body areas
- Protection
- Eye and sensitive-area shielding is used
What the cabin provides
The cabin contains lamps that emit narrowband UVB, commonly used under a dermatologist’s plan for conditions such as psoriasis, vitiligo, and eczema. Standing inside lets light reach the front, sides, and back of the body more consistently than treating one small patch at a time. The clinician adjusts exposure according to your skin response, treatment area, and previous sessions.
You normally wear eye protection and cover areas that should not receive light. Genital skin, the face, tattoos, or other sensitive areas may need specific protection. The cabin is a delivery space, not a diagnosis; the treatment plan should identify which condition is being treated and how response will be monitored.
Before and after a session
Tell the phototherapy team about medicines, supplements, recent sun exposure, photosensitivity, eye problems, and any new rash or infection. Follow instructions about moisturiser, clothing, and shielding. During the session, stand as directed and report burning rather than trying to tolerate it silently. Afterward, use the recommended moisturiser and record redness, tenderness, or worsening symptoms so the next dose can be adjusted.
When to seek care
Contact the phototherapy team for painful redness, blistering, marked swelling, severe itching, or a reaction that lasts longer than expected. Seek urgent help for eye pain or vision changes after accidental exposure. Tell the clinic about any new medicine before your next session because some medicines increase light sensitivity.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which skin areas will be exposed, what must be covered, how your dose will be adjusted, how often reviews occur, and what reaction is expected after a session. Ask how to handle missed sessions, home sun exposure, and medicines that may affect light sensitivity.

Questions people ask
Why not treat every area with a small lamp?
A cabin can expose multiple or larger areas in one session with more consistent positioning and dose control.
Can I decide the dose myself?
No. The phototherapy team sets and changes the dose using your skin response and treatment history.
