Why is magnesium sulphate used in antenatal care package?

This medicine is given by a maternity team, usually through a vein or as an injection, with close observation. Its purpose depends on the situation: it can calm overactive nerve activity when pre-eclampsia creates a seizure risk, or it may be offered when very early birth is expected to support the baby's developing nervous system. It does not lower blood pressure by itself and does not remove the need for delivery planning or monitoring.

Tell staff about kidney problems, breathing conditions, medicines and any previous reaction to magnesium sulphate. During treatment, the team checks breathing, reflexes, urine output and general wellbeing. You may feel warm, flushed, sleepy or nauseated; report worsening symptoms promptly. Do not take magnesium products on your own as a replacement for hospital treatment.

Get urgent maternity help for a severe headache, visual disturbance, pain under the ribs, sudden swelling, confusion, a seizure, heavy bleeding, severe breathlessness or reduced fetal movement. These warning signs need immediate assessment, whether or not magnesium sulphate has already been given.
