Why is intramedullary nail used in limb lengthening surgery?

During the operation, the surgeon creates a controlled bone cut and places a lengthening nail inside the bone. A mechanism in the nail gradually separates the bone segments according to a planned schedule. The body can then form new bone in the developing gap, while the nail helps maintain the limb's axis and alignment.

The nail may reduce the need for an external frame, but it does not make recovery simple. Muscle tightness, joint stiffness, nerve symptoms, alignment changes, and delayed bone formation are monitored during treatment. Suitability depends on bone size, growth status, anatomy, and the reason for lengthening.

Attend scheduled imaging and clinical checks so the team can adjust the plan if bone formation or alignment changes. Perform the prescribed stretching and strengthening exercises, protect the limb as directed, and use walking aids correctly. Report new numbness, increasing tightness, or difficulty moving a nearby joint rather than pushing through it.

Contact the surgical team for increasing pain, new weakness, numbness, drainage, fever, or a sudden change in limb shape or length. Seek urgent care for severe swelling with intense pain, a cold or pale foot, chest pain, severe breathlessness, or fainting. A fall or impact needs review if it changes loading, alignment, or device function.

Ask how the nail lengthens, what daily adjustment plan is expected, how often images are needed, which activities are restricted, and how the team will decide when the bone is ready for full loading.
