Why is inactivated vaccine used in rabies vaccination?

The virus in an inactivated vaccine has been rendered unable to multiply. Your immune system can still encounter parts of it and build a response. This makes it suitable for preventing rabies and for urgent vaccination after a possible exposure, when a prompt immune response is needed.

Vaccination after an exposure may involve more than the vaccine alone. The clinical team assesses the animal contact, the wound and your previous rabies vaccination history to decide on the appropriate care.

Wash the area thoroughly with soap and running water as soon as possible, then seek urgent medical assessment. Do not wait for symptoms or try to judge risk from how small the wound looks. Tell the clinician where the incident happened, which animal was involved, and whether saliva contacted broken skin or the eyes, nose or mouth.

Bring any available record of previous rabies vaccination. Attend every arranged vaccine appointment, because protection depends on completing the plan selected for your situation.

Seek care urgently after a bite, scratch, or saliva exposure from a mammal where rabies is a concern. Get prompt help for deep wounds, wounds on the face or hands, uncontrolled bleeding, spreading redness, fever, or increasing pain. A clinician can also check whether the wound needs other treatment.

Ask whether this contact needs rabies post-exposure care, whether any additional wound treatment is needed, and what dates you should return for follow-up. If you were vaccinated before, ask how that changes the plan.
