Why is hysteroscope used in hysteroscopic polypectomy?

A hysteroscope is a slim viewing instrument passed through the vagina and cervix into the uterus. It sends an image to a monitor, allowing the clinician to identify the polyp, see its attachment, and work inside the cavity with controlled movements.

Small instruments can pass through the hysteroscope. The polyp can therefore be detached and removed under direct vision, while the surrounding uterine lining is observed. This differs from removing tissue without seeing the exact area being treated.

Follow the instructions about medicines, eating, drinking, and arranging transport if sedation or anaesthesia is planned. Tell the care team about pregnancy possibility, allergies, bleeding problems, and medicines that affect clotting.

After the procedure, mild cramping or light vaginal bleeding can occur. Use only the pain relief and activity advice provided for you, and keep any follow-up appointment so the removed tissue and your recovery can be discussed.

Contact your care team promptly for heavy or increasing bleeding, severe or worsening pelvic pain, fever, foul-smelling discharge, faintness, or trouble passing urine. These symptoms need assessment rather than being assumed to be routine recovery.

Ask where the polyp is located, whether the hysteroscope will be used with local anaesthesia, sedation, or general anaesthesia, and when normal activities can resume. You can also ask when the tissue result will be available.
