Why is glycolic acid used in a chemical peel?

Glycolic acid is a small-molecule alpha hydroxy acid. Applied for a controlled time and then removed or neutralised according to the formulation, it helps shed some built-up surface cells. This can improve the look of dullness, uneven texture, and some marks left after inflammation.

Peel strength, contact time, skin sensitivity, and preparation affect the depth and response. A peel is not the same as daily home exfoliation: professional assessment helps match the product to the concern and reduces the chance of excessive irritation or pigment change.

Tell the clinician about sensitive skin, eczema, active infection, cold sores, recent sun exposure, retinoids, exfoliating products, and previous pigment changes. Do not apply an unapproved acid or pick peeling skin.

After treatment, mild stinging, redness, tightness, dryness, or flaking may occur. Use the recommended bland moisturiser and sunscreen, cleanse gently, and pause irritating products until the skin barrier has recovered.
