Why is Gamma Knife used in stereotactic radiosurgery?

Gamma Knife is a radiation-delivery system used for selected targets in the brain. Treatment planning combines scans with a three-dimensional map so the team can shape the radiation around the target. Individual beams travel from different directions and meet at the planned focus, where their effects add together.

The aim is to treat a small, clearly located lesion or abnormal area while reducing radiation to surrounding tissue. It is called radiosurgery, but no surgical cut is made. Suitability depends on the target's size, number, location, diagnosis, previous treatment, and your general health. Radiation effects may develop gradually rather than immediately.

Give the team a complete medicine list and mention implanted devices, allergies, pregnancy or possible pregnancy, and difficulty lying still. Ask whether you need a frame or a mask for positioning and how long the visit may last. Follow instructions about food, medicines, and transport; fatigue or a headache may make driving home unsuitable.

Contact your treatment team for worsening headache, repeated vomiting, new weakness, confusion, seizure, vision change, or increasing problems with balance after treatment. Seek emergency help for a first seizure, loss of consciousness, sudden severe weakness, or trouble speaking or breathing. Prompt assessment helps distinguish expected effects from problems needing treatment.
